Procesadora
Campofresco,
the most modern and versatile juice
manufacturing plant in Puerto Rico and the
Caribbean, was established in 1982 with
the development of Caribik Sun, the
company’s innovative line of tropical
fruit nectar concentrates. Introducing
products previously unavailable in the
consumer market, like passion fruit,
guava, tamarind and soursop,
Campofresco
grew steadily over 10 years of success
after which the company moved its
operations to its current location in the
city of Santa Isabel, in the southeast
coast of Puerto Rico.
|
Campofresco
was the first Caribbean company to
introduce tropical fruit products to
the European market in 1990, the
first Puertorrican company to
participate in the most important
food shows in the northern
hemisphere (the Anuga
in Cologne, Germany, and the
FMI in Chicago, U.S.) in
1990, and the first Caribbean
company to introduce a passion fruit
product to the sophisticated and
demanding Japanese market in 1992
(the Karibenokajitsu passion fruit
flavored carbonated beverage).

Campofresco’s
manufacturing plant, located 15 minutes away from Ponce (the most
important city in the southern region of Puerto Rico) and 45 minutes
away from San Juan (the island’s capital), is built on 80 acres of
land which cover the largest underground reservoir of high-quality
water in the Caribbean. This water, ultimately used in
Campofresco’s
manufacturing processes, is actually rain water that is naturally
filtered as it drains through the area’s limestone-heavy soil.
Covering nearly 200,000 square feet, and incorporating 13 production lines,
Campofresco’s facilities constitute the only plant in the Caribbean capable of sustaining high-volume production of high-quality products under strict quality controls and supervision, meeting the demanding requirements of companies like PepsiCo and Ocean Spray for which
Campofresco produces Gatorade, Tropicana, Ocean Spray and other products locally as part of a strategic alliance aimed towards the elimination of the shipping costs of these products.
Recently added production lines incorporate the latest in packaging technology as a response to the juice and beverage industry’s changing trends, whereas aluminum cans have come to replace the traditional tin cans, and hot-blown and hot-filled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles have replaced glass and PE (polyethylene) bottles. These two packaging technologies comprise more than 50% of the total industry market.
Campofresco has gradually incorporated these technologies in all its consumer products, and made them available for companies like Amigo, Coloso, Econo, Grande, Mr. Special and Wal-Mart,
for whom Campofresco
manufactures products under their privately owned labels. In addition,
Campofresco
manufactures commercial food service products for restaurant and other
food and beverage industry establishments, and fruit beverages
packaged in flexible plastic pouches using its exclusive and
innovative Alipak patented technology for the Puerto Rico Department
of Education School Lunch Program.

Employing
nearly 200 workers in a positive, union-free environment,
Campofresco
offers its employees retirement plans, medical insurance, trimester
incentives and technical trainings and workshops in addition to
amenities such as an in-plant cafeteria and recreational activities.
Many of Campofresco’s
employees have worked for the company for more than 10 years.

The plant is under continuous
inspection by the United
States Department of Agriculture
(USDA, which monitors the production
of juices and food products for the
Puerto Rico Department of Education
School Lunch Program as of 1996.
Since the closing of Hawaii’s last
pineapple processing plant in 2006,
Puerto Rico became the only U.S.
territory able to grow pineapples
and produce pineapple products for
the U.S. Federal Government under
its food programs

for the Department of Education. As
a fact, pineapple cubes are the
second favorite product in school
lunch programs after sliced peaches. |
In late 2007,
Campofresco
was certified to be in full compliance with A.I.B. International’s Consolidated Standards for Beverage Plants and PepsiCo Global’s Food Safety Standards for Beverage Plants, passing a rigorous inspection with flying colors.
